Experience required

This is the most advanced class on our public schedule. Attendance requires either the teacher’s permission or ongoing study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. Students should have a consistent personal practice, including independent practice of Śīrṣāsana (headstand) and Sarvāṅgāsana (shoulderstand), and be comfortable working within the structure and language of an Iyengar Yoga class.

Class description

This intermediate class is designed for students who already have a solid working knowledge of Iyengar Yoga and wish to deepen their understanding through sustained, focused practice. Classes emphasize clarity of action, intelligent sequencing, and thoughtful use of props, with attention to how poses are constructed and how actions evolve within a posture.

Rather than covering foundational material, this class builds on shared concepts, terminology, and set-ups so that time can be spent refining understanding and exploring more complex relationships within and between poses. Students are expected to listen carefully, work independently, and apply instructions with discernment.

Prāṇāyāma and philosophical themes are incorporated as appropriate, drawing on texts such as The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali and the broader framework of Iyengar Yoga. The class is rigorous in its attention and inquiry, and is best suited for students who are committed to continued study and long-term practice.

Format
