Join Us for an Afternoon of Yoga & Community Giving

Six months after Hurricane Helene devastated our part of the world, some of us have returned to a normal rhythm of life. Others are still clearing downed trees from yards and patching roofs. And there are some who are still piecing together lives after losing everything: homes, cars, furniture, appliances, work tools, toys, clothes. The cameras have turned away, but the crisis continues.

As an expression of karuṇā (connection to all beings and the responsibility to act with kindness and care), Iyengar Yoga Asheville is offering three ways to support those affected by the storm:

1.       Attend an Afternoon of Yoga on Saturday, May 31st from 2:00-4:45 pm.

Join IYAVL teachers for an afternoon of yoga asana, philosophy, and pranayama. All proceeds from this donation-based class will go directly toward Swannanoa Communities Together, a group of Swannanoa Valley community members that support each other by providing housing stability, financial assistance for rent and utilities, FEMA navigation assistance, free kids toys and books, a supply of pantry items, firewood, and care for each other. Please note, donations to attend this event are not tax deductible.

Register for one or both classes through the studio calendar and donate what you can:

2:00-3:30 pm – Yoga Asana with Randy, Lindsay, Cathy, and Ned

3:45-4:45 pm – Philosophy Discussion and Pranayama

2.       Donate directly to Swannanoa Communities Together.

Can’t make the Afternoon of Yoga on May 31st? Please consider donating directly to Swannanoa Communities Together to continue their ongoing work in the Swannanoa Valley. Donations made directly through their website are tax deductible.

3.       Join a community care, mutual-aid effort.

Nonprofits and government agencies are providing essential services in the area, but they are often slow to respond and there are gaps that remain. A mutual-aid network uses trusted relationships to get people resources quickly.

Swannanoa Communities Together and other regional networks continue to receive requests for emergency housing, rent, utilities, medical expenses, and funds to replace destroyed household items. By joining this network, you receive a notice when a request pops up and you can contribute as you are able. Please note, donations are not tax deductible.

If you’d like to learn more or are interested in joining a network, please submit your information using our Contact Form and Lindsay Majer will follow up with you.

Thank you for being a part of the IYAVL Community!
